Filling Stations Business
Over the years the business has identified itself mainly as a fuel and LP Gas retailer. The business started off in 2006 with an offer to run City Centre filling station by the then BP Malawi Ltd who later sold their stakes to Puma Energy Malawi Ltd in 2012. In 2009 Bluewaves was also offered an opportunity to operate Kasungu BP on caretaker basis and run it until December 2011. After being impressed with our turning around the fortunes of Kasungu BP, BP Malawi management requested us to move to Ntchisi BP which was also facing management problems. We once again turned around the fortunes of Ntchisi and a substantive dealer was appointed. Similar offers took us to Lumbadzi BP in May 2014 where we operated for only 5 months and the premises were sold to Mt Meru and we were moved to Nkhotakota BP where we operated up to July 2017. Again the premises were sold to Simso Oil and Puma was evicted. Puma moved us to Dwangwa Puma where we operated from October 2017 to April 2018. The premises were once again sold to Simso Oil and Puma was evicted. Two months later Puma asked us to open Palmrock Puma a new to industry site near Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe. This filling station was built in 2016 and stayed over a year without opening. Puma entrusted us to open it and we run it from June 2018 to July 2019. The owners of the premises took over and continued to operate the business.
In 2017 after the two Nkhotakota evictions, we decided to look for land in Nkhotakota to build a Puma branded filling station as the two evictions left the stretch between Salima and Nkhata Bay with no Puma representation. The first place land was found was Mkaika Trading Centre 40km South of Nkhotakota. The filling station was built and opened its doors in August 2019, one month after leaving Palmrock Puma. Currently we have a construction License for another place at Nkhotakota Boma and we are processing another application with MERA for another license in Zomba.
Liquified Petroleum Gas Journey
In 2008, we were approached by the then Afrox Malawi Ltd Managing Director to consider establishing a LPG sales outlet out at City Centre Filling Station where most of their customers in Lilongwe would go to exchange their cylinders. In those days LPG had a serious negative perception by many Malawians. Many filling stations declined the offer. We started slowly selling as low as 600kg a month. Slowly business started picking up and in a few months we moved to above 2500kg a month. We moved to Kasungu and secured more business. In 2022 our LPG sales picked at over 24000kg per month courtesy of the persistent black outs as a result of the shut down of Kapichira Hydro Power Station. In 2018 we won a tender to fill up 5000 3kg cylinders.
Bluewaves is currently operating in 4 outlets at City Centre, Nkhotakota, Area 23 and Area 15. We have two refilling plants and plans are under way to have more to reduce distances where people can access LPG. Our customer base are domestic customers who exchange and refill as well as industrial.
In January 2021, Mr. Happy Jere decided to transition from Sole proprietorship into an incorporated Private Limited company. With himself, Mrs Salome Jere and Gomezgani Jere as initial directors and shareholders. A process is underway to incorporate other directors and open up shareholding of the business to interested investors.
Main areas of Bluewaves Energies Ltd is to improve distribution of LPG products and renewable energy technologies. It is the desire of the company to see LPG should replace charcoal in most high density peri-urban households where unsustainable charcoal is mostly used.
